Why Good Employees Sometimes Get Stuck in the Same Role for Years

Being good at your job should help your career move forward.

At least, that’s how it seems.

You work hard. You meet deadlines. Your manager trusts you. Coworkers know they can depend on you. You rarely create problems, and when something goes wrong, you’re usually one of the people trying to fix it.

Yet somehow, years pass and you’re still doing essentially the same job.

The salary has improved a little.

Your responsibilities may have increased.

People may even tell you how valuable you are.

But when you look at your career, you start wondering:

“If I’m doing such a good job, why am I still in the same place?”

It’s an uncomfortable question, but there are several possible answers.

Sometimes the problem is the company.

Sometimes there simply isn’t an opening above you.

But sometimes good employees get stuck because the behaviors that make them excellent at their current role aren’t the same behaviors that help them move into the next one.

And recognizing that difference can change how you approach your career.

Being Good at Your Job Isn’t the Same as Being Ready for the Next Job
