Career advice often makes progress sound like a staircase.
You start at one level, work hard, get promoted, take on more responsibility, earn more money, and eventually move into management or a senior position.
It sounds logical.
But real careers rarely work that neatly.
Sometimes the smartest career move isn’t a promotion. It might be a lateral move into a different team, a role with fewer responsibilities but better learning opportunities, a move into a new industry, or even a temporary step sideways that gives you skills your current position can’t provide.
The problem is that we often confuse career progress with career hierarchy.
A bigger title can look impressive while doing very little for your long-term career. Meanwhile, a less senior-looking role can quietly give you better skills, stronger relationships, broader experience, and more options later.
So before you automatically chase the next rung on the ladder, it is worth asking a different question:
“Will this move make my career stronger?”
Not simply:
“Will this move make my title bigger?”
A Promotion Isn’t Automatically Progress
