How to Become Better at Work Without Taking on More Work
Career advice often makes improvement sound like a volume problem.
Take on more responsibility.
Volunteer for another project.
Join another committee.
Learn another skill.
Work longer hours.
Say yes to opportunities.
Keep adding things to your plate.
There is nothing inherently wrong with any of that. Sometimes taking on more is exactly what helps someone grow.
But there is another way to become better at work that is often overlooked:
Improve the way you handle the work you already have.
You can become more capable without adding another project to your calendar.
You can become better at solving problems without working more hours.
You can improve your reputation without constantly trying to make yourself more visible.
And you can build career-relevant skills simply by changing how you approach ordinary responsibilities.
The difference is subtle.
Instead of asking:
“What else can I take on?”
start asking:
“How can I do the work I already have at a higher level?”
That question can lead to surprisingly significant growth.
More Work Isn’t Automatically More Growth
