How to Turn a Repetitive Job Into an Opportunity to Build Better Skills

There will be periods in almost every career when the work feels routine.

That’s normal.

Not every job can provide constant excitement, rapid promotions, and new challenges.

The important question is what you’re doing with the repetition.

You can simply become faster at completing the same tasks.

Or you can use those tasks to become better at seeing patterns, solving problems, improving processes, communicating, teaching, using technology, and understanding how work fits together.

Those skills can eventually take you somewhere different.

So if your job feels repetitive right now, don’t immediately assume that the only solution is to leave.

First ask a more useful question:

“What could this job teach me if I stopped looking at it as just a list of tasks?”

You may find that there is more career-building material inside your ordinary work than you realized.
