What to Do When Your Career Progress Is Real but Your Options Still Feel Narrow

Career progress can be surprisingly confusing.

You get better at your work. Your responsibilities increase. People trust you with important tasks. Maybe you have even received a promotion or two.

From the outside, everything looks like it is moving in the right direction.

But then you look at what you could realistically do next, and the list feels much shorter than you expected.

You know your current job well, but you are not sure what other jobs your experience qualifies you for. You have become valuable to your team, yet that value seems tied to one particular role, company, or type of work.

That can create an uncomfortable question:

What if I am progressing, but not expanding?

These are not necessarily the same thing.

A career can move upward while becoming increasingly narrow. You can become more senior without becoming significantly more flexible. You can gain experience without gaining the kind of experience that opens new doors.

The good news is that this is usually fixable.

The goal is not to throw away the progress you have already made. It is to understand what your progress has actually given you and then deliberately add capabilities that make your experience useful in more places.
