What to Do When Your Job Gives You Experience but Not the Experience You Need

One of the strangest career situations is being able to say:

“I’m gaining experience, but I’m not getting the experience I actually need.”

You show up.

You do your work.

You learn new things.

Your resume gets another year added to it.

Maybe your responsibilities have even increased.

Yet when you look at the jobs you eventually want, something feels missing.

The problem isn’t necessarily that your current job is bad.

It may simply be teaching you the wrong things for the direction you want to take.

That distinction matters.

Because experience is not automatically valuable just because you have more of it.

What matters is what that experience is helping you become capable of doing.

More Experience Doesn’t Always Mean More Career Progress
