Sometimes the answer is deeper expertise.
Sometimes it’s broader experience.
Sometimes it’s a combination.
If you’re already strong in one area but don’t understand the wider business, broaden.
If you have lots of exposure but nothing you can do particularly well, deepen.
If you’re highly specialized but becoming trapped by that specialization, add range.
If you’re broadly experienced but struggling to stand out, develop a stronger core.
And if you’re still unsure, don’t make the decision theoretical.
Test it.
Take a project.
Talk to someone.
Study the requirements for a role you might want.
Spend time with another team.
Go deeper into a difficult problem.
Then see what you learn.
The strongest careers aren’t built by choosing depth over breadth once.
They’re built by knowing when each one is useful.
You need enough depth to have something valuable to offer.
You need enough breadth to understand where that value can be applied.
And over time, the combination can give you something even more useful than either one alone:
the ability to take what you know and use it in more places, with more people, to solve more meaningful problems.
