Being the person everyone depends on is not a problem.
It becomes a problem when the organization needs you mainly because you’re excellent at staying in the same place.
You don’t need to become less dependable.
You need to become dependable at a higher level.
Move from solving the same problems to understanding why they happen.
Move from completing tasks to owning outcomes.
Move from being the only person who knows something to building systems others can use.
Move from accepting every request to making thoughtful trade-offs.
Move from being valuable because you’re available to being valuable because of your judgment.
And if your current company gives you no room to make those changes, use what you’ve built as the foundation for your next move.
Because the goal of being a great employee isn’t to become permanently indispensable to one particular position.
It’s to become capable enough that your career keeps expanding even when the job around you doesn’t.
