There’s nothing wrong with identifying skill gaps.
You should know what you need to improve.
But career development becomes much more productive when you balance that question with another:
“What do I already have that I could use more strategically?”
You may not need to completely reinvent yourself.
You may need to reposition what you’ve already built.
The experience you’ve accumulated could point toward a different role.
A strength you’ve treated as ordinary could become a specialization.
A combination of skills you’ve never considered together could create new opportunities.
And a reputation you’ve quietly built over years could open doors that another qualification can’t.
Your career advantage doesn’t always arrive with a certificate or a promotion announcement.
Sometimes it’s been sitting quietly in your everyday work for years.
The trick is noticing it before you start looking somewhere else for something you already have.
